How should you plan the full elevation of a room?
Historic England records Brunswick Terrace’s stucco fronts and the later subdivision of its houses into flats. Your property may have another history, but the interior deserves equally careful observation. Look at the height of doors, the position of windows and any retained cornice before filling a wall with cabinetry. A fitted bedroom or kitchen can then be explored in relation to those proportions, with sufficient room for movement and furniture.
Choose a material in the light it will occupy
The Jaipur Gate in Hove Museum’s grounds combines detailed carving with a carefully structured form. It is a useful reminder that surface and composition work together. Bring tile, stone and cabinet samples into the actual room, and consider them beside retained floors and joinery. For large-format surfaces, discuss joint positions, supporting surfaces and thresholds as well as colour. An appealing sample needs a convincing place in the complete interior.

Brunswick Terrace
Numbers 7–19 date from 1824–1828. Their stucco fronts form the southern return of Brunswick Square’s eastern side.

At 19 New Church Road, the museum occupies the former Victorian home of a prominent local family.
Jaipur Gate
In the museum grounds, this carved gateway was commissioned for an 1886 exhibition in London and donated to Hove Museum in 1926.
