How can the outlook inform the room layout?
A window can organise a room, but the view should be considered alongside cooking, seating and the route through the house. Mark where you naturally pause and where furniture currently gets in the way. For a kitchen alteration, compare the position of tall storage with working surfaces and natural light. Include how the room is used after dark, so lighting and comfortable everyday movement receive the same attention as the daytime outlook.
Give large surfaces a clear framework
At White Lodge, Lutyens used patterned Portland stone and slate paving within a carefully arranged sunken garden. The local example shows how setting-out can give a surface its character. For large-format interior tiling, begin with dimensions, junctions and visible edges. Discuss the existing background, access for bringing materials inside and where cuts will fall. Compare samples with cabinetry and adjoining finishes before deciding how strongly the tile should define the room.
Plan comfort around actual use
If a bedroom or living space becomes uncomfortable at particular times, describe when it happens and how the room is occupied. Window orientation, existing heating and possible equipment positions all belong in the initial discussion. Residential air conditioning can be explored through an assessment of the building and the proposed scope. When interiors are changing too, include both parts of the project so routes and maintenance access can be considered before finishes are settled.

Roedean School
John W Simpson designed the principal school and boarding-house range, built in 1897–1898 and extending for around 150 metres across the site.
White Lodge sunken garden
This private garden on The Cliff was designed by Edwin Lutyens in the 1920s. Its listed structure includes patterned paving in Portland stone and slate.
Roedean’s Undercliff access
The cliff road opposite Roedean Café links Marine Drive with the coastal path below, connecting this shoreline with Brighton Marina and the settlements to the east.
