Saltdean’s interwar architecture gives the neighbourhood a character of its own. The Lido and former Ocean Hotel were both designed by RWH Jones in 1938, while the Undercliff Walk connects the shoreline with the wider coast. How should the room guide its layout?
The Lido’s rounded forms and the Ocean Hotel’s concave frontage show how confidently a few clear lines can organise a building. That is a useful point of reference when planning an interior. Decide which edges should align: the worktop and splashback, a shower screen and tile joint, or cabinetry beside a doorway. Take those relationships from the actual room, including anything you want to retain, before selecting a decorative finish.
Look at materials in coastal light
Bring tile, cabinet and worktop samples into the room and view them at different times of day. A surface that looks restrained in a showroom may read quite differently beside a bright window. Compare texture, reflectivity and adjoining colours as a group. For a tiled bathroom, include the floor, wall edges and any recesses in the discussion so the finish has a considered beginning and end.
Make returning home feel easy
If swimming or an Undercliff walk forms part of your routine, include towels, shoes and outdoor layers in the storage brief. A bathroom or kitchen project can also create a better place for ordinary household tasks. Think about the route from the entrance, where wet items can go and which cupboards need to be reachable. Resolve ventilation and service access alongside the visible furniture, rather than filling every available gap.

Completed in 1938, RWH Jones’s Grade II* listed Lido is a distinctive example of the Moderne seaside architecture of the interwar years.

Also designed by RWH Jones in 1938, the listed front block on Longridge Avenue has a broad concave curve and symmetrical composition.
Saltdean’s Undercliff
The coastal path reaches the Brighton and Hove boundary at Saltdean, linking this stretch of shoreline with Rottingdean, Roedean and Brighton Marina to the west.
